Spreading the Love! Community Responds with Aloha at the 4th North Shore Blood Drive
Fun had by all at the 4th North Shore Community Blood Drive held in the parking lot of Dr. Abshier’s office on Haleiwa Drive. People began lining up early in the morning to sign-in at the Blood Bank of Hawaii’s tent located in the courtyard adjacent to the Bloodmobile. These unsung hero’s, as Dr. Abshier refers to them, give the gift of life without any reward, except the knowledge that their blood helped save lives.
Sheri Yanagida, Field Representative of Donor Services said, “There is a real sense of community spirit and pride on the North Shore and since each unit of blood can be separated into three components, close to 80 lives can be saved as a direct result of their effort”.
According to Arnel Gustavson, the blood drive coordinator, one of this years goals was to raise up a new generation of donors, “first timers” as she puts it, and she was thrilled to report that 30 percent of Saturdays participants were new donors. Arnel commented, “When others are out surfing or still sleeping in, it was wonderful to see the younger folks giving up an hour on a day that for most is their only day off.”
First timer donor and committee member, Ed Lowndes of Waialua said, “It was great being part of something so important and I’ve always wanted to donate, because heck, ya never know when you might need some blood, they don’t call me Ed-mergency for no reason!”
